Boost Your Mood with this Energizing Smoothie Recipe

When I use to think about food, I only thought of it as a means to stopping hunger.  I get hungry, I eat…it’s that simple…or is it?

I never gave much thought to how eating certain foods could help beyond stopping hunger.  I never thought food could actually help prevent or stop my mood swings either.  Food was just food.

I suffered from depression throughout all of my teen and young adult life.  No matter what I did, I just could not seem to make it go away.  I was always tired and never wanted to do much of anything.

I never thought that what I was eating…or better yet, what I WASN’T eating, would be able to help ease this emotional pain.  I thought it was just what it was.

Looking back on those years, I rarely ate fresh whole foods.  My diet (when I did eat) mainly consistent of all heavily processed food items.  No wonder I was depressed all the time AND overweight!

FOOD POWER

After that experience, I finally discovered the power of food.  It was quite literally, a moment of clarity for me.

I discovered that as I ate certain foods (foods that are grown) my body felt more alive.  My weight started to go down, I had more energy, and my moods were more balanced.

I knew that by changing my eating habits, not only did my waist line decrease, BUT my moods changed too.  This is when I discovered that food was more than food…it was medicine.

Smoothies are a great way to start your day.  You can pack them will lots of whole foods that will give you more than just a full belly.

In this recipe, you will find foods that are packed with a variety of vitamins, healthy fats, blood sugar stabilizing abilities and it’s just plain tasty.  It is also packed with coffee which is always an added bonus if you ask me.

Ingredients:

1 frozen banana
½ cup blueberries
2 tablespoons cacao powder
1 cup almond milk
2 tablespoons chia seed
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ cup freshly brewed coffee, chilled.

Directions:

Toss all the ingredients into your blender on high until smooth.  
Add more almond milk if you want it thinner.
Adjust the sweetness to your taste using honey or stevia.
Enjoy!

Adding more and more whole foods to my diet really changed my life.  I was not only able to get on the path toward weight loss success but also stabilizing my moods for good.

Understanding this simple fact, that food is more than food, should be empowering.  You don’t have to be a slave to how you feel, you can choose to feel your best.
